Thirty years documenting London’s most prestigious projects

– from HS2 infrastructure to Canary Wharf developments

Documenting London's Construction Excellence

Documenting London’s Construction Excellence

I’ve been photographing London’s construction landscape for over three decades, and I can honestly say there’s nowhere quite like it. From the moment I first documented the intricate steelwork at King’s Cross Station to capturing the ambitious HS2 infrastructure taking shape across the capital, London has consistently challenged and inspired my work as a construction photographer.

As the Master Photographers Association’s Commercial Photographer of the Year, I’ve had the privilege of documenting some remarkable London projects – the engineering marvel of Boeing’s Gatwick hangars, the architectural elegance of Brentford FC’s new stadium, and the complex building envelope work transforming the capital’s skyline.

What strikes me most about London construction is the sheer ambition. Whether it’s the £180M Norton Folgate development pushing the boundaries of adaptive reuse, or the precision required for HS2’s record-breaking Colne Valley Viaduct, every project demands photography that matches the engineering excellence on display.

Transport Infrastructure

Transport InfrastructureThe capital’s transport network never stops evolving. I’ve captured the £547M transformation of King’s Cross Western Concourse, with its stunning 20-metre diagrid shell roof creating geometric patterns that blend heritage with cutting-edge engineering. The Old Street Station upgrade presented different challenges – documenting complex underground works whilst keeping passengers moving above.

HS2 has been particularly rewarding to document. The Colne Valley Viaduct, now Britain’s longest rail bridge, required capturing not just the scale of the 3.4km structure, but the precision of the specialized launching gantry installing over 1,000 pre-cast segments.

Aviation Excellence

Gatwick’s Boeing Golden Care Hangar stands as one of my proudest achievements. Documenting the installation of three 20-tonne door frames and the massive steel framework required understanding both the engineering challenges and the commercial importance of keeping aircraft maintenance operations running smoothly.

The scale of aviation infrastructure demands specialist photography that captures both technical precision and operational complexity. From the intricate crane operations positioning massive steel sections to the final hangar capable of servicing the world’s largest commercial aircraft, every phase required photography that matched the engineering excellence on display.

Premier League Architecture

Brentford FC’s new stadium captured the nation’s attention, and I was there throughout the construction process. From the complex large-span structural steelwork to the golden bolt handover ceremonies, every phase told the story of a club’s remarkable journey to the Premier League.

The stadium’s innovative design required documenting both the technical sophistication of modern sports architecture and the emotional significance of a community landmark. Working with specialist contractors during active construction phases, I captured the precision engineering that creates world-class sporting venues whilst maintaining the safety protocols essential for live construction sites.

Why I chose Peterborough as my strategic base for London work

You might wonder why an award-winning London construction photographer operates from Peterborough rather than the capital itself. The answer is quite straightforward – it gives you the best of both worlds: quick, direct access to London sites, without the overhead costs that London-based photographers inevitably pass on to their clients

More importantly, it means I can offer rapid response times across the entire South East corridor, from Cambridge’s biomedical facilities to Kent’s infrastructure projects.

This strategic positioning has proven invaluable for multi-site projects. When documenting HS2’s various London touchpoints, or coordinating coverage across multiple TfL upgrades, having that flexibility to move efficiently between sites makes all the difference to project timelines and budgets.

Multi-Site Coordination

Many London developers and contractors work across multiple sites simultaneously. I regularly coordinate photography across several locations in a single day, optimising travel routes and timing to maximise efficiency whilst maintaining the quality standards each project deserves.

This capability extends beyond single-day scheduling — for phased developments or portfolio management across the capital, I can maintain consistent coverage from groundworks through to completion, regardless of how many sites are running concurrently

Building Envelope Specialisation

London’s complex urban environment demands specialist knowledge of curtain wall systems, rainscreen installations, and facade engineering. Having documented major building envelope projects including Norton Folgate and Waterloo Station for Lindner Prater, I understand the technical details that matter to facade engineers and cladding contractors.

From the advanced Vantage® SF rainscreen systems at Dovehouse Street to the complex curtain wall installations at 8 Bishopsgate, I work regularly with London’s leading building envelope specialists including Lindner Prater, Schuco UK, and Tier 1 contractors across the capital. This isn’t just construction photography – it’s technical documentation that supports procurement, quality assurance, and project handovers.

RIBA Standards & Awards Documentation

London architects expect photography that meets RIBA submission standards. I’ve documented multiple projects that went on to win regional and national RIBA awards, understanding exactly what judges look for in architectural photography submissions.

This includes capturing the design intent, construction quality, and contextual integration that RIBA panels evaluate. Whether supporting award submissions or creating marketing materials for architectural practices, the photography meets the professional standards expected in London’s competitive market.
